Webs with love: Enhance or redesign?
Hello everybody!
Happy start of decade. The website of my company, Webs with love has one year old.
I know that needs a change, adding more information, more images/icons to improve the content, and some special section like labs, blog, etc.
Here is my question: Should I have to redesign the whole website to a more "normal" website or improve the current?
Thank you for your time!
Happy start of a decade indeed! Gosh, time flies!
Well, in my personal opinion, it's a lot of fun to start over and do everything from scratch, since you have the opportunity to correct your mistakes. So, if I was you, I would re-do it from scratch, while keeping some things like the smart footer (but with icons) and, more importantly, make it fully IE6 compatible. By that, I mean to make a design that works perfectly in IE6, while trying to make it as good looking as possible. I fired up IE6 to test it and there are some glitches (but don't worry, they're not awful, and you made a very nice job!). Many people judge web design using IE6, and it is good to be prepared.
That's my 2 cents, I believe you should re-do it for the fun. If you're way too busy or don't think it would be fun, I suggest to change the header to something more clearly understandable, maybe put some sections, and use more icons.
Good work, btw =)
Hello Camilo,
Thanks for your suggestions, very constructive. I think you're right, it's a good idea to redesign from scratch with the experience adquired in the current site.
Thanks a lot for your time, you're very kind =)
I like the colors and textures. One thing that really confused me on this site was the header area where it says "Well done, beautiful, useful, etc." Clicking on it took me to the portfolio "page". I expected site navigation to be in this area. Didn't realize "Let's talk" at the bottom was the navigation -- could be a little bit clearer. One more thing I'd work on is white space between various elements -- just needs a bit more spacing as it feels a little bit cramped right now.
Also: I don't think the site needs to be more "normal". I think it's good to try out a novel approach, especially for design sites and portfolios.
This website is pretty fun :) I like the navigation idea/concept, it's pretty cool and fancy. I am sure lot of people go crazy and play with for a little while.
However, and like the previous comments, I really think it can be a good thing to start from scratches. In the previous year, we had lot of enhancements about typography and how things should be approached. Your portfolio is the right place to be creative and express your imagination.
Few things to keep in mind: you have to be careful with user habits. Don't hesitate to ask comments during the whole redesign process. What can be easy and really cool for you can be a nightmare for users. In the same order of idea: try to keep font simples (for example: the font on the top saying: we make things easier for you, is difficult to read).
Many people judge web design using IE6, and it is good to be prepared.
I am not that sure. My website is not IE6 compatible and I receive job offers every day :) One thing you have to make sure: your audience has to understand your website. If your statistics are showing more than 10% of your visitors are under IE6, then yes, you should support it. Otherwise, it's a personal choice AND a matter of time (debugging can be a real pain).
Good luck!
@xethorn
Thank you guys, your commets are unvaluable.
I'm considering all your points in the design process of Webs with love v2.
Happy to see you like the concept of the web. So I will work to improve this concept.
I'm still open to listen new comments.
Thanks again!
@sanbor
I agree with Dmitry, I don't think your site should be more normal. It's really pretty but you should get rid of the scroll bar when you do your redesign. I use Firefox with NoScript so I can't read everything on your site - a lot of the text is hidden behind the navigation.
Dez has pointed out something valid, the site should have a noscript fallback...
...But seriously, Dez, how can navigate without scripting? I mean, everyday browsing is impossible without scripting. It's like driving without tires an the wheels!
Camilo Martin: But seriously, Dez, how can navigate without scripting? I mean, everyday browsing is impossible without scripting. It's like driving without tires an the wheels!
It's not like driving without tires, and it's definitely not impossible -- it works pretty well in fact. And the NoScript extension to Firefox does some clever cheating to enhance the scriptless browsing experience, so it's not exactly as browsing without any script support.
Browsing without NoScript is really a pain in the ass once you get used to it. You are the master of the browser, and not anyone else -- it also increases performance a bit (although some things are slower since you cannot use ajax).
Of course there are some sites (like that one we are talking about) that doesn't work without script, and how I hate them. ;)
But most sites works very well.
(It's still nearly impossible to browse without CSS support although, but I have tried! :P )
And sorry for being off topic ...
When I did the website, I took care about this detail, and in some change I broked up.
Now I fixed a little bug in the css (overflow:hidden).
So now Webs with love works as spected for the non-javascript users.
Enjoy =)
Your site is terrible. I do not advise you to redesign it, I advise you to rethink everything you know about web-design and read some books. Really.
@Supercharged:
Hey, that's not constructive criticism =P
It's not terrible, there are terrible websites, this one isn't. This one is on the grayscale.
@Camilo Martin - I love NoScript. It stops big pointless Flash files invading my nice clean browser (I have a download limit). And it saves a lot of time because I don't generally browse sites that can't be arsed with accessibility. You can add permanent exceptions to NoScript which makes it a lot easier.
@Supercharged - that is the second unconstructive comment you've made here. Perhaps you should consider joining a different forum.
I think if its redesign it should use more content area. currently it's very compact. gray background is very dull. I advice you to redesign
